
Courtney Guyton McBurney
Courtney McBurney is a partner in Alston & Bird’s Government Investigations and Compliance Group. She regularly conducts internal and independent investigations, defends clients facing government investigations, and advises corporate clients concerning forward-looking compliance. Before joining Alston & Bird, Ms. McBurney served as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, where she was a member of the Fraud and Public Corruption Section of the Criminal Division.
Ms. McBurney has conducted extensive investigations on behalf of corporate clients in the areas of mortgage fraud, accounting fraud, and securities fraud. She has experienced changes and trends in the laws and regulations governing residential real estate loans, both in her former position as a prosecutor and more recently as a private lawyer representing companies and individuals. She often assists clients facing overlapping state, federal, and international investigations that are both criminal and civil in nature. The Georgia Super Lawyers organization has repeatedly recognized Ms. McBurney a “Rising Star” in White Collar Criminal Defense.
Ms. McBurney received her A.B. from Princeton University. She received her law degree from Vanderbilt University, where she served on the senior editorial board of the Vanderbilt Law Review and was elected to Order of the Coif. She also served as a law clerk to The Honorable Frank M. Hull on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
